The new Post-9/11 G.I. Bill will become effective 1 Aug 2009. The VA will allow eligible personnel to select the new Chapter 33 benefit beginning 1 May 2009. Although this is a GREAT benefit for many, it is NOT in everyone’s best interest. I strongly encourage anyone thinking about transferring your Chapter 30 (the current VA educational benefit that you paid $1200.00 into) to the new Chapter 33, to talk to a school VA education counselor or someone at the education center prior to making the selection. Once you select Chapter 33, there is “NO RETURN” to your old benefit. If you have ever used any of your Chapter 30 benefit, this is especially important. Before you make a decision to switch to Chapter 33, there is critical information you NEED:
1. What school will you attend and what is the cost of tuition and fees?
2. What state will you attend school in?
3. How much of your Chapter 30 benefit have you used?
4. How much time do you have on Active duty since September 10, 2001?
5. What type of program will you be attending?
6. Will you need to take certification exams?
7. Do you intend to transfer the entitlement to a family member?
All of this information is required to determine if switching to Chapter 33 is in your best interest. Please do not make this decision without filling out a worksheet to determine what is best for you. Again, once you select Chapter 33, that is all you will ever have. If you have questions, please let us help you find the answers. If we cannot answer you, we know who to call. Click for Presentation about this information.
